Truir - Martin Hayes, Peadar O'Riada & Caoimhin O Raghallaigh - CD Launch
To mark the release of Triúr Arís the trio will be on a short concert tour commencing in The Carnegie Arts Centre in Kenmare on the 1st February and concluding in the Abbey Theatre on Sunday 12th February. This one off event is highly significant for both the performers and the Abbey Theatre. For musicians it is an honour to perform on the National stage and for the Abbey this is a rare one off concert by three of Ireland’s internationally critically acclaimed musicians. Individually all three have brought their music to audiences in all corners of the world. Their contribution to Irish culture is un-measurable but can be attested to, by the reverence each are given by their peers and the numerous awards and plaudits they have received. The Abbey holds great resonance for Peadar as his father Sean Ó Riada was its Musical Director from 1955 to 1961. This was by far his father’s most creative and productive time as a composer. During this period he founded Ceoltóirí Chualann; composed the score for Mise Éire and Saoirse as well as the music for the film of the Playboy of the Western World starring Siobhán McKenna. He commenced his time there as John Reidy and by the time he left he was known as Seán Ó Riada. 'I am really looking forward to sitting in the Abbey Theatre again from whence so many stories came into our home when I was a boy. This is the space where my father, and his friends worked and created magic for many. It is a touchstone to many events and people who had a major influence on my own thought process. To have the privilege of playing there with my own friends Martin and Caoimhín is a precious gift gratefully received and we hope we can create our own magic on the night.” Tickets €18/16
‘One of our most accomplished composers has joined with two of our finest fiddlers – and the results may echo for years to come…’ The Irish Times In late November 2011 3/Triúr gathered at Ó Riada’s home, An Draighean in Cúil Áodha, county Cork and recorded 18 tracks of 20 new compositions by Peadar. This, their second CD is not only a meeting of great musical minds but also a tour de force of masterful playing of inspired composition. Together they share a deep understanding of their musical heritage and their mutual respect for each other makes for ensemble playing that brings the music to a level that the listener can at once engage with. From the foot tapping polkas and reels to the delicate beauty of the airs and the courtly hornpipes and jigs the music is soulful, witty and always intimate. The ease of their playing also belies the arduous task of learning such a body of new work in a short time. Peadar Ó Riada, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Martin Hayes are well versed in the traditional of Irish music. Yet their compositions speak a modern language through the virtuosity and delicate weave of their playing. "Each time I play with Peadar and Caoimhin I feel as though I'm revisiting the wellspring of the music. We play with no mission other than to fully experience the music with as much feeling as possible. For us the meaning, feeling and content of the melody takes precedence over note perfect playing.” Martin Hayes The origin of Irish tune titles are often a great subject of debate for players and academics. In Peadar’s sleeve notes he tells of the source of the inspiration and the people they are dedicated to. Of special mention is the polka Maith thu Muiris (Track 5) a tribute to Muiris O’Rochain, founder and director of the Willie Clancy Summer School who passed away in October 2011. Collectively and without hesitation they all agreed to dedicate the album to him. |
